Frustrated because that cupcake you ate went straight to your thighs but pastry seems to have no effect on the next guy? A new University of California Los Angeles study says you probably gained weight, and he didnt, because of a difference in your genes.

As a health diet, a href= is solid. Its decent at producing rapid weight loss, according to experts, and is strong in other areas, such as heart health and nutritional completeness, that arguably are more important.
The experts conferred solid marks on a href= raw food diet/a for weight loss, both short- and long-term, but considered it all but impossible to follow and its nutritional completeness and safety were concerns. Doing it well involves considerable commitment and effort, knowledge and sacrifice, one expert said. And there are diets that require less of all these that are likely to be just as healthful.
It is now possible to reduce t in specific areas, and for those who think I am wrong, I will bet you my Rose Bowl Championship ring over it.
One expert summed up a href= as a healthier version of the Atkins diet, but compliance is likely to be more difficult. Thats because its restrictive and little guidance is available.
09:02 PM on 01/11/2013 Okay. Maybe now we have something else to fight obesity with. Hopefully thirty years from now well be seeing obesity the same way we see substance abuse--as a disorder to be treated rather than as the result of character flaws.

The opening line of this article is such poor writing...Genes will only determine the degree of negative response in the body to unwise choices; and likewise the degree of positive response in the body to wise choices. No mention is made of what happened to the rats in the study that ate a healthy diet - just that in two groups who ate an unhealthy one, only some of them showed negative effects. The search for genes predisposing people to depression has taken an unexpected twist, according to Canadian researchers who found a clue in an obesity gene....
The genetic differences translated into some mice being naturally more active and some being more effective at generating heat and thereby burning calories.

Still, the researchers emphasized that environmental ctors such as diet and exercise are also important to weight gain.

But these experts were lukewarm about its potential to bolster heart health or help diabetics. Experts also noted that Jenny Craigs cost could be a roadblock for some.

If we understand how genetic ctors influenced so much of the population to become obese, we could potentially reverse it with more research, Dr. Parks said.
07:48 PM on 01/11/2013 I literally went on the bacon diet to gain weight for body building. I was eating every 2 hours, I was never hungry even for 1 minute of the day because I always ate. While a href= Anti-Inflammatory diet/a itself is nutritionally sound, experts expressed concern that its needlessly complicated, lacks supervision or feedback, and boasts unsubstantiated claims like the benefits of supplement use. Most Americans would benefit from adopting many of these principles, especially increasing fruits and vegetables, one expert said. What is lacking is scientific evidence that this diet will reduce inflammation in the body and that weight loss results from following it.

Even though the mice were eating the exact same diets, their weight gain varied greatly. The high-t diet caused no change in body-t percentage for some mice while others body t percentages increased by a whopping 600 percent.
a href= outperformed its competitors in many categories. It earned particularly high marks for being safe and nutritious, and experts said it could have a positive effect on heart health and diabetes. This is an eating plan that everyone can benefit from, one expert said.
I am willing to bet that researchers will never find an all-powerful t gene (or genes) that we can blame for our weight-gain troubles. There will never be a gene therapy that will allow us to eat what we want. Genetic testing is not the answer.
UCLA researchers studied the response of mice fed a high-t diet. They found a great variation in weight gain, and determined that obesity is largely determined by genetics.
07:53 PM on 01/12/2013 Many on this thread are iling to consider undiagnosed thyroid problems. A nephew of mine is a big kid and was just diagnosed with Hashimotos disease. This also causes weight gain and lethargy. His folks had him playing sports like baseball and football in an effort to keep his weight under control but to no avail. Im hopeful that with treatment he can be a normal sized kid over time.
In follow-up studies, the researchers hope to identify more t genes and test the identified genes to understand how theyre contributing to weight gain. The scientists also hope to understand the genetics of losing weight.
07:44 PM on 01/11/2013 Thank you! Thank you so much. Ive been telling myself as well as everyone else this for years. Im also lazy and eat too much.

03:54 PM on 01/16/2013 Yes, I am 100% serious. Obesity kills? Oh yeah? Prove it. Cant? Because theres no science to back that up? What a surprise. Body size is not a medical condition. Ignorance is a condition, and you appear to suffer from it, but much like body size, its not medical. Heres some education for you:

While diet and exercise are still large ctors in obesity, the degree to which one gains weight from a high-t diet is largely determined by genetics, according to researchers.

In the study, funded by the National Institute of Health and appearing in the print version of the journal Cell Metabolism, UCLA researchers gave more than 100 genetic strains of mice a normal diet for eight weeks, followed by a high-t, high-sugar diet for another eight weeks.

a href= Watchers/a is a smart, effective diet. It surpassed other commercial diet plans in multiple areas, including short- and long-term weight loss and how easy it is to follow. Experts were likewise unenthused about a href= It scored above average in short-term weight loss but was dragged down by lower marks in most other categories.
Dr. Brian Parks, study co-author and a postdoctoral researcher at the Geffen School of Medicine, told HuffPost that he hopes this and future research will lead to designing drugs and treatments that specifically target t genes.
If people consume a high-t diet, the response will be predominantly determined by genetics, Dr. Lusis said. But whether you choose to eat a high-t diet in the first place is largely environmental.
a href= sits near the middle of the standings. Its quite safe, easier to follow than many other diets and has few nutritional deficiencies, according to experts. As a heart diet, its off the mark.
a href= Flexitarian diet/a, which emphasizes fruits, veggies, whole grains, and plant-based protein, is a smart and healthy choice. Weve all seen those people who eat a lot and dont gain weight. Our results are entirely consistent with that notion, principal investigator Dr. Jake Lusis, a professor of medicine and human genetics and of microbiology, immunology and molecular genetics at the Geffen School of Medicine, told The Huffington Post. It isnt just all about how much we eat. Genes had a huge effect.

Experts gave little credence to a href= Macrobiotic diet/a on several counts: Following the plan is a challenge. Its an extreme change from the standard American diet. And its awfully strict. The macrobiotic approach, one expert summed up, is a mix of sound dietary guidance, mysticism, folklore and nonsense.
09:51 PM on 01/11/2013 We have known this for decades. But ignorance and judment are things that can be prevented. Those who choose to scapegoat and blame t people choose to ignore the best scientific evidence. They are no different than any other type of bigot; they need to blame their targets because their prejudice is a type of functional dysfunctional for them. It serves the purpose of letting them point fingers at others and never examine what is wrong with themselves! Fat can be beautiful, intolerance is ALWAYS ugly!

Many of our experts found the popular low-carb a href= diet/a leaves much to be desired, at least as an all-purpose diet. Although our expert panel concluded that it could outperform nearly all of its competitors in short-term weight loss, unvorable marks in other measures -- including long-term weight loss, nutrition, safety and heart health -- yanked down Atkins in the standings.

I notice how they keep wanting to make thinness a virtue when for the most part its luck of genetics that lets you be skinny most of the time.
With its emphasis on fruits and vegetables, olive oil, fish, and other healthy re, the Mediterranean diet is eminently sensible. And experts assessments of it were resoundingly positive, giving this diet an edge over many competitors.
Experts took issue with the diet on every measure. Regardless of the goal -- weight loss, heart health or finding a diet thats easy to follow -- most experts concluded that it would be better for dieters to look elsewhere. A true Paleo diet might be a great option: very lean, pure meats, lots of wild plants, said one expert -- quickly adding, however, that duplicating such a regimen in modern times would be difficult.
a href= is a reasonable approach to dieting, experts concluded. It outscored a number of competitors on weight loss and as a diabetes diet, and being highly structured, its irly easy to follow. But it scored lower than many other diets on heart health.
